Welcome to the first UK Beat Report, a monthly wrap-up of the fight scene in the United Kingdom.
September is quite a busy month for British boxing, especially compared to the past few months.
There was a decent crowd at Middlesbrough watching the highly anticipated featherweight rematch between John Simpson (20-6, 8 KOs) and Paul Truscott (13-2, 1 KO). Simpson won via TKO in the 10th.
Gavin Rees (36-2, 31 KOs) the former WBA Light Welterweight Titleholder made his comeback with a comfortable stoppage of Johnny Greaves (2-37, 1 KO) Rees 29, will drop down to lightweight and hopefully get a world-title tilt. Bradley Pryce (28-7, 17 KOs) also fought on the undercard and was impressive as he comfortably won a shutout decision against Michael Monaghan (18-25, 2 KOs). Pryce is hoping that Enzo Calzaghe’s new strict regime can fire him up the rankings.
Light-heavyweight ten world title bout veteran Clinton Woods (42-5-1, 24 KOs) lost to Tavoris Cloud (20-0, 18 KOs) via competitive unanimous decision. Despite losing most of the rounds on the scorecards, Woods showed that the veteran still had something left in the tank at European level.
David Haye (22-1, 21 KOs) will fight Nikolay Valuev (50-1, 34 KOs) on 7th of November in Germany after John Ruiz (43-7-1, 29 KOs) stepped aside as a mandatory challenger to the WBA titleholder.
A long-awaited rematch is slated between Sam Sexton (12-1, 5 KOs) and Martin Rogan (12-1, 6 KOs) after their first bout got stopped by a mouse under Rogan's left eye. The bout will take place at the Odyssey Arena, Belfast on the 9th of October. Nathan Cleverly (17-0, 7 KOs) will fight on the undercard. Tony Bellew (9-0, 6 KOs) has called the Welshman out and is willing to fight in his hometown.
Carl Froch (25-0, 20 KOs) will begin his quest for super middleweight domination with a fight against Andre Dirrell (19-0, 12 KOs) in a battle of skill against will. The fight will be at Nottingham, 17th of October for the WBC super middleweight title.
A dream domestic lightweight contenst will take place between John Murray (27-0, 15 KOs) and Jon Thaxton (34-10, 19 KOs) for the vacant British lightweight strap after Murray failed to make the weight by 1.5 oz in his previous bout against Scott Lawton (26-5-1, 5 KOs)
Looking ahead, Tyson Fury's (7-0, 7 KOs) big step-up in class fight is on the 11th against John McDermott (25-5, 16 KOs), for the vacant English heavyweight title. John McDermott is coming off two competitive losses to Danny Williams (41-7, 31 KOs) who has just signed for the latest instalment in the Barry Hearn Prizefighter Tournament. The British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC) has allowed Williams to defend his British title on the night. The winner of the tournament will be crowned the new British Champion and will take home a nice cheque of £32,000. The venue has been changed to the ExCel Arena after reports came that they had sold-out Bethnal Green twice over. The tournament will take place on the 2nd of October and features the strongest field that the tournament has ever seen. Sydney Gold Medallist, Audley Harrison (23-4, 17 KOs) will be hoping to spark his rivalry with Williams and get his revenge over former Commonwealth Champion Michael Sprott (31-14, 16 KOs) who knocked Harrison out in the 3rd round when the pair met at Wembley Arena. Two unbeaten fighters, Coleman Barrett (8-0, 2 KOs) and Danny Hughes (6-0-1, 1 KO) will line-up alongside journeymen Mike Holden (10-9-1, 6 KOs), Scott Gammer (18-4-1, 9 KOs) and youngster Scott Belshaw (10-2, 7 KOs).
On the undercard of Fury-McDermott’s bout at Brentwood, unbeaten heavyweight Tom Dallas (6-0, 4 KOs) will take on an unnamed opponent, and Larry Olubamiwo (4-1, 4 KOs) will be hoping to recover from his points defeat to Russian Daniil Peretyatko (16-26, 6 KOs). Ashley Sexton (7-0, 3 KOs) will fight for the vacant British flyweight title.
Barry Hearn promotes from Bethnal Green on September 18th where the feature bout is for the British Light-Welterweight Title pitting unbeaten star Ajose Olusegan (27-0, 13 KOs) against Lenny Daws (19-1-1, 7 KOs).
On September 19th, Wigan, plays host to a light heavyweight contest for a chance to face Danny McIntosh (10-1, 6 KOs) as Carl Dilks (12-1, 4 KOs) takes on Billy Boyle (12-2, 7 KOs).
Hatton Promotions host an intriguing card at the Manchester Velodrome on the 25th of September as middleweights Danny Butler (18-1, 3 KOs) and Darren McDermott (16-2-1, 9KOs) clash for the Butler’s middleweight belt. As the main event, middleweight Matthew Macklin (24-2, 17 KOs) hopes to earn a title-shot and win the vacant European Belt against Amin Asikainen (26-2, 17 KOs). Macklin’s first defeat came controversially against Andrew Facey (20-5-2, 6 KOs) on points and his second came to Mr. Excitement Jamie Moore (32-3, 23 KOs) who announced an all British light-middleweight contest against Ryan Rhodes (42-4, 28 KOs) in a potential set-up for a mandatory challenge against either Sergio Gabriel Martinez (44-1-2, 24 KOs) or Cory Spinks (37-5, 11 KOs).
